A True Story, Calling for Change

The call for positive change on Australia’s roads has been championed by 2022 Senior Australian of the Year, Val Dempsey. Val’s tireless efforts are driven from both experience as a St John Volunteer and family tragedy. When Val’s daughter and a friend were involved in a car accident, bystanders came to help but didn’t know what to do. In those crucial moments, a life was lost.

Val has used her platform to advocate for First Aid training to be an essential skill for all drivers in Australia. In 15 countries world-wide, First Aid is a mandatory prerequisite to holding a driver’s licence. In Australia – where First Aid training rates are low – St John is working with governments, partners and communities to promote systemic change.

Already success is being seen through initiatives by State and Territory Governments in ACT, SA and WA. We aim for more to come!
